The basis of our organic growing process revolves around a special peat moss-based growing medium called Pre-Mix and an organic plant food called Essential Elements. When these two products are mixed together in a raised bed constructed from common cement blocks, the bed becomes a pH balanced growing system.
The patented Pre-Mix is a peat moss-based potting mixture that also contains organic cotton burr compost and rice hulls. It is a non-herbicide sprayed compost.
Essential Elements contain a 4-3-3 fertilizer with 42 trace elements and has been carefully formulated to help plants obtain and maintain optimum nutrition. Plants grown in this organic fertilizer consistently absorb tremendous amounts of nutrients.
One five-gallon pail of Essential Elements per bed is generally recommended before each planting. How much EE needed is determined by the number of gardens and/or plantings per year. For example, typically, in the southern United States, three gardens can be planted in the calendar year.
Cement blocks are preferred because they are inherently modular, readily available, and inexpensive. A block's holes can be used to integrate vertical support structures for growing plants. For example, cattle panels, which are welded steel grids with 6" square openings, can be wire-tied to the vertical structure creating an excellent support system for climbing plants. Flexible PVC tubing seated properly in block holes can create an arch structure that can support greenhouse material in the event of a cold snap or frost, is another example. In addition, blocks don't leach chemicals into the soil the way railroad ties or landscape timbers will.
We are aware of some customers that have lined the exterior wall of the blocks with treated lumber to enhance the natural look. Some people have surrounded their beds with either shadow box or picket fences to enhance the attractiveness. All in all, the blocks are functional and line your bed with a non-chemically based structure. Should you desire to make your bed or beds a piece of lawn architecture, go for it! Make your beds a creative expression all your own!
